Library Information Technology Specialist, Springfield City Library (Springfield)

Due to a retirement, we are recruiting candidates for the library system's Information Technology Specialist. The person in the job will have among their job duties:

Responsible for providing technical support for computer hardware, software, and operating systems throughout the Library Department. Work is performed with a high level of initiative in achieving goals and objectives, with reporting responsibilities to the Manager of Information Technology, who reviews work through reports and meetings. No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Provides hardware and software support for both the public and staff computers, as directed by the Manager.

Assists with the implementation of hardware and software upgrades.

Provides training on software packages used by library staff.

Customizes software application packages required by library administration.

Assists in development, distribution and maintenance of in-house user guides and documentation.

Participates in the development of Information Technology Division policies and procedures.

Assists in the development and management of a disaster recovery plan and security procedures, back-up protocols and schedules.

Develops and maintains inventories of hardware and software, including logs of equipment assignments, equipment and software upgrades, serial numbers, warranties and service calls.

Works in back-up capacity in absence of department Manager.

Compiles and maintains all statistics for the Library Department.

The position is based at the Central Library, and the Specialist works at all of our nine library locations throughout the City of Springfield. Questions are welcome via LinkedIn, but all applications must be filed on the City of Springfield's website.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent specialized training and certification in computer science.

Minimum of three years of experience customizing office software packages, including Microsoft Office products.

Considerable knowledge of information systems, software, and applications.

Working knowledge of typical library and relevant networks and related computer systems.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library staff and the general public.

Good problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.

The City of Springfield has a residency requirement and allows new hires up to two years to establish residency. 

Ability to be “on call” a rotation of evenings and weekends.

Ability to keep abreast of new developments and technological advances in library information technology.

Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Valid Massachusetts’s driver’s license.

Salary Notes

This position is part of a union, and the contract includes a 2% raise effective July 1, 2026.
